Art Explorers, Inc. is a nonprofit creative arts program in Fort Bragg, California, on the North Coast, that primarily serves adults with developmental disabilities. We are a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt corporation.

“Our mission is to provide a fun, nurturing, non-judgmental, and artistically stimulating environment for creativity to thrive. Here people with disabilities are welcomed and accepted as artists, by artists.”

Art is a universal, non-verbal language, without definite rules or restrictions, and therefore is open to anyone, regardless of disabilities. The studio is an uplifting magical place! Our philosophy is rooted in total respect for the individual and the core belief that all people, regardless of ability, have a unique artistic voice.

Creating art together gives people a sense of purpose, and promotes camaraderie. This helps to combat the isolation that’s inherently part of the lives of many. We’ve seen how important personal expression is to our clients. Our program has helped to improve the self-esteem of every participant, and offers a pathway to inclusion to disabled individuals on many levels.

Part of our mission is to honor our students’ best work with the use of fine art materials and quality framing. We connect our students with the greater Mendocino Coast arts community by facilitating the exhibition and sale of their artwork, both in our studio and at local galleries and businesses. We also take them on field trips to local galleries, and go on a yearly field to see their artwork on display at the Mendocino County Fair.

Our art openings are a wonderful avenue for recognition and give our students a great sense of pride and excitement. Displaying their best artwork introduces other people to the special gifts and contributions of developmentally disabled artists.

Art transforms lives, and opens the window to the deepest expression and yearnings of the human spirit.
